Financial Rights

You Should Know

Understanding your financial rights is a key step toward protecting yourself, your family, and your future. Here are essential rights every woman and citizen should know when dealing with banks, money, and financial institutions.

1. Your Rights at the Bank

• You have the right to open a bank account without discrimination (age, gender, income, caste).

• You do NOT need a minimum balance to open a basic savings account.

• Banks must clearly inform you about fees, charges, and interest rates.

• You have the right to receive a receipt for every transaction.

2. Loan & Credit Rights

• You have the right to say NO to a loan offer — never feel pressured.

• Loan documents must be explained to you in your language, if needed.

• You are entitled to a copy of the loan agreement and repayment schedule.

• No lender can demand extra or hidden charges once the loan is issued.

3. Protection from Fraud & Misuse

• Your bank cannot share your personal data without your permission.

• Never share your PIN, OTP, or passwords — even with bank staff.

• If you report fraud within 3 days, you are not liable for the loss.

• Always verify loan or investment agents — many scammers pose as officials.

4. Your Right to Financial Inclusion

• You can demand access to government schemes and subsidies via direct deposit.

• Women have the right to own property, land, and bank accounts in their name.

• Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and cooperatives must be transparent about how your money is used.

5. Right to Financial Information

• You have the right to ask questions about any financial product or investment.

• You can request written documents in a simple, understandable format.

• You are entitled to monthly account statements and annual financial summaries.

Knowledge is power. If your rights are violated, contact your bank's grievance cell, consumer helpline, or a local legal aid office. Stay informed, stay protected!
